Okay, I'm no figure skater, but even I can tell that this isn't just skating. This guy is performing and he loves every second of it. He's telling a story. He's commanding everyone to look at him. This isn't just technical. There is real, genuine feeling in this performance, and you can tell.
This guy is my all time favourite too and like you, Im no figure skater. The recent quadruple leaping Russian named American is probably technically better, but I found his routine quite boring. It reminded me of those idiotic gestures the gymnast do on the beam in between doing all their clever stuff. This routine is extraordinary. I am a ballet lover though, so perhaps it’s the performance that matters to me just as much as the technicality. He totally entertain me and moves me on all levels. This is over 10 years ago and I’ll always remember it. There was a French guy about 26 years ago in the Olympics that dressed up as D’Artagnan and he was just incredible but he got third or fourth place. 🤷♀️
I've never been impressed by quads anyway. The revolutions have to be so fast in order to pull off a quad, they basically just look like a frenetic triple.
Not gonna lie, he lacks the consistency for triple axel too. But not all skaters need to be jumping machines and we definitely need people like Jason in the game.
This step sequence though....so complex and beautiful 😍 It’s a shame that this sport has turned into a quad race. It takes space away from the sheer loveliness of artistry and whoo boy! Jason has that. It’s too bad single ice dancing isn’t a thing. If it were, Jason would decimate all.
Correct, and you've hit on something I always say...the one thing that adds something so special for Jason is that he would also have made a great dancer...not many skaters have that (Robin Cousins had that ability, too). Plus he knows what kind of music to pick...something the audience can relate to...something that gets his heart racing, as well as the audience. Too many skaters pick such blah music...something you've never heard before and never want to hear again, but it sounds classical...maybe they're trying to impress the judges with that kind of music, but they should at least pick something from the classics that is more memorable!

Completely agree. It’s so ridiculous that skaters like this don’t get the medals and recognition for their incredible skating just because they don’t do an extra rotation in their jumps. I’d take a performance like this over a bunch of quads any day of the week. The judging system needs to be completely reformed.

As an Irish dancer I’m always a little dubious when people perform Riverdance routines, whether it’s gymnastics floor routines or skating. But Jason joins Bourne and Kraatz and Dominique Moceanu in having a great one.
Jason Brown's musicality and ability to interpret every note of the music is IMO what figure skating should still be. The intricate footwork he does is just as difficult as a quad and much more impressive. Too bad they don't judge accordingly. This program and his long program, Schindler's List from Bejing are two of his best performances.
Grateful to two exceptional artists in their own expressive ways: Jason Brown and Kurt Browning Thank you for carrying the torch Jason after Kurt's retirement!😊

Because a quad jump is harder to perform. Personally I prefer ice dance and the artistry and skill of superior skating skills and footwork, but it's undeniable that a quad jump is an amazing athletic feat.
@@amaterasu777 I respectfully disagree. Quad jumps are difficult to perform but I am a fan of more than the quad. Idk, both technical difficulties and artistry are important in figure skating. Doing a quad is insanely difficult, and as a skater myself I am sometimes more impressed by someone who does quads and better jumps even if they are slightly lacking in artistry, but often the converse is also true. It just depends. (But if you haven’t tried a lot of figure skating its hard to see that.) You need both artistry and technical difficulties to win though. Really it comes down to a philosophical question, who is the sport for and what is it’s purpose? What upsets the spectators may please the fans. Nobody has a good answer to this question, and it’s all a matter of opinion. Jason Brown is exceptional though, just as there are exceptional jumpers. In the end the system favors a mix between the two. Also consider that figure skaters spend a lot of their practice time on jumps.
